New Grey Whistle Test

New Grey Whistle Test
I went to see Dufus play live at the Jug of Ale in Moseley last night, and was lucky enough to be let in early to catch a shoot for the New Grey Whistle Test, an internet-only live music ‘telly show’. It did make me wonder about the viability and potential for such a venture, but they seem to have made a good go at it.

It’s a little rough around the edges — I watched an episode this morning and found myself reciting all of the interviewing ten commandments: ‘Don’t ask yes/no questions!’ ‘Never ask “who are your influences?”‘ etc. — and they use the term ‘broadcasting’ and ‘television’ a little too liberally for my pedantic tastes (hello – whole different medium here…) but it’s the kind of site that you not only wish well, but hope gets the support and encouragement it needs.

Backup everything.

If there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty about using your computer it’s this: IT WILL FAIL.

Duplicate all of your files and put them somewhere safe. Off-site backup is an ideal solution. Homes and offices get burgled, damaged or burned to the ground. Your insurance company will not be helpful in this regard. Get all of your music files, all of your business documents and all of your photos and make sure that if the worst happened to your computer(s) you would cope.

Second Life logoOne of the fastest-rising internet phenomena you should know about if you’re serious about marketing and distributing music on the internet is the virtual world known as Second Life.

It’s essentially a 3-dimensional environment — much like an online computer game — though there are no villains to kill, missions to accomplish or points to score. It’s a social space.

You can walk around (or fly, if you prefer) in the online world, meet people, chat, and explore this new world. So far, so dull. I can chat to people online already. Why bother?

iTunes - just one of many media players

There’s nothing better than an orderly music collection. The correct album artwork, everything in its right place and all the relevant information all neat and tidy. It makes you just want to sit and listen to that music.

On the flipside, there’s nothing worse than digital music – paid or otherwise – that doesn’t fit into your existing collection in any sort of meaningful way. Nothing irritates a consumer faster than downloading a track and finding that it’s named sd3jk3832s_23.mp3 — and there are no other details.
