My name’s Andrew Dubber. I’m the Degree Leader for Music Industries at Birmingham City University, UK. I’m a senior lecturer and researcher with a particular interest in online music, radio and new media technology.

I tell you this not to suggest that anything here is connected to BCU — merely to offer context, and in some small way, present my credentials.

A bit of background

Originally from New Zealand, I’ve been based in the UK since September 2004.

My background is in both radio and the music industry, and I’ve written numerous articles, book chapters, and conference presentations about these sorts of new strategies and technologies in both of those sectors.

I’m the co-author of a book about new technologies for broadcasters in developing nations, commissioned by UNESCO, and I have been a member of the steering committee for the Radio Studies Network. I’ve written for Computer Music Magazine and sections on blogging and podcasting for the Alternative Media Handbook (Routledge, 2008).

Since my arrival in England, I’ve been the project co-ordinator on a research and training project called Online Music Enterprise, funded by the European Social Fund and the Learning and Skills Council. I teach on a music industry degree in the Media Department at BCU — the first of its kind in the UK.

I’m currently engaged in an Arts and Humanities Research Council project in collaboration with BBC Future Media and Technology, investigating audience interaction with music radio. These days I’m also a Knowledge Transfer Fellow for the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Public speaking and consultancy

Most of my time outside of the university is spent travelling, presenting seminars and workshops across the UK and elsewhere (from Oslo to Shanghai, Amsterdam to Auckland) and consulting independent music businesses — from established record labels and retailers to entrepreneurial online music start-ups.

On occasion, I have been known to offer my consultancy in exchange for travel and expenses if it’s somewhere interesting — and, if I’m generating intellectual property for your business, then we can negotiate a modest equity share instead of cash payment for my consultancy.

I live in Hall Green in South Birmingham with my wife, Bobbie and my son, Jake — neither of whom are sufficiently enthusiastic about jazz music.

More online information

I also use this as a dumping site for all sorts of links to articles about music online. Check the Newswire page. Hopefully that’s helpful.

I run a couple of other websites that intersect with this one.

New Music Ideas reviews websites of help to music business and musicians.
New Radio Strategies discusses radio in the digital age.
The New Music Biz investigates the music industries around the world.

My personal blog is simply http://andrewdubber.com. There’s a lot more about me to be read there.
