Irish artist and writer Tommie Kelly sent me a link to his wonderful web comic Road Crew, and I thought you might be interested. Clearly Tommie has spent time in the company of musicians, studio engineers, and roadies – because the observation is completely spot on.
It’s been going for about a year (I always get things late) and – apart from anything else, it’s really interesting watching his style develop over that time. Musicians can do that too.
I also like the fact that him letting me read his webcomic online leads me to want to buy the collectible and scarce physical product. Musicians can do that too.
Likewise the ‘donate and receive digital merchandise’ thing he’s doing. You could do that as well.
Smart and talented. Good mix. Enjoy.

Hey Andrew,
Thanks for the very kind words and for putting up the links.
Wishing you continued success,
Tommie
Agreed. Free stuff only makes you more interested in physical product.
Andrew,
This is a first for me….good morning.
Again first, you generally offer a wonderful point of view that is upbeat, helpful and, ultimately, encouraging. This is a good thing in a world of doom and gloom, at least at the moment in many eyes.
As to the free and then interest and then purchase/own….in my day…(I’m 54)….you listened to the radio, which was free, and every now and then you got interested in a song or two and then the artist and then an article in a magazine and then you went out into the real world and stopped by your “local” record store and, amongst like-minded humans, you scanned the racks and found the “record.” It was reasonably priced and you bought it. You went home and you shared it with your friends and family in the safety of your room/home.
You, hopefully, enjoyed it. It spoke to you. You then went to see the band in concert and maybe even bought a t-shirt. You became a fan.
You told all your friends to “check this out.” You related to each other by way of a shared experience. Nothing has changed except the delivery systems….you know..the internet is the new radio and the likes of “i-tunes” is the new record store. Everything else has remained the same…except maybe the notion of mobility outside the “room.”
Andrew, friends…..listen with your ears…feel with your heart….share with your friends and family. Along the way…people ultimately want “ownership” of things so they can call it their own….to have and enjoy for the rest of their lives…or at least the life expectancy of whatever it is you have/are….
A ramble…but that’s my thoughts at the moment….
Andrew…thank you for shining a bit of bright light on the good things that are our there to own and share…and hopefully enjoy.
Here’s to you…
Mitchell
Great tip, thanks Andrew!
I just discovered your Web site today! Congrats, you’ve made it to the blogroll! I look forward to checking back in …
Thx a lot Andrew. The comic looks great. Will definitely read through the archives.
I also have discovered a very funny muso comic called Bassist Wanted, written by Porter Masson.
Check it out at:
