Which video service should I use?

We’ll return to our regularly scheduled series of ‘questions I keep getting asked about music online‘ after the weekend. In the meantime, I just wanted to follow up this thread of video services. I tried all the ones that were suggested to me - and a couple of others too. I’ve ended up at blip.tv.

I like the interface, I’m happy with the video quality, it has some nice podcast-friendly applications - but it’s also very simple and very user-friendly. I’ve grown to like the idea of the 90-second “long photograph” of Flickr - but for my purposes, this will do me. And besides - quite a few readers reported problems with the image embed in RSS readers.

And to those who’ve asked “why not Vimeo?” (the closest contender): It’s the typography. The font they put over the videos themselves is kind of ugly. Until something better comes along (or unless this proves to be a feed-reader unfriendly move to make), I’m hitching my video blogging wagon to blip.tv.

I’m looking forward to putting some whole seminars up there. Next addition is the tripod and a decent mic to attach. Recommendations?

  1. Not sure if you’ve found it yet - the video appears blank in google reader (for me anyway).

  2. Okay, the typo is a good reason. I’ll check blip.tv out.
Good luck for the next steps!

  3. http://www.bluemic.com/

These folks make some of the highest quality mics around and they pioneered the USB mic.

Have a look, I think you will find something you like and they also are very affordable…at least the USB ones are!

  4. Glad you like blip.

What I’d personally do is to also have a lower quality video for youtube since this is the main channel everybody goes to.

Use blip to embed and youtube to generate more traffic even if the quality is lower.

  5. I found the video from April 4th.the best, good pictures and good sound. The one in this issue stopped at several times and pics and sound were not always in sync

  6. Al

I’m getting an error in Google Reader as well. Doesn’t look like the best choice in the world…

  7. i get audio but nothing visual - in firefox - but i do have my anti virus software turned on which sometimes gives me trouble - i’ll try again without it later

  8. You should check out Viddler. Nice for longer video and viewers can leave time-coded comments throughout. They also have a nice wordpress plugin apparently.

I haven’t used this service yet, but did a bit of research myself for when I do start using and this looked like the way to go.
