I love what you are saying here. I'm an independent musician working to bring my music to as many people as I can, and being very real about the strategies I need to employ to do so. I look forward to reading more of what you say, because it's awesome.

Really looking forward to this series of articles. I've been reading the site for some time and just wondered if at some point it would be worth looking at some case studies of artists or labels who have been exploring a few of your ideas to get some "real world" feedback. As you say there is no specific model or solution but a more collective idea of what maybe working for different peole would be great information to have access to, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to get people to contribute.
Maybe a "20 things" sequel??

Thanks for this post. I just recently found your site and have subscribed to the RSS feed and was glad to see this pop up in my inbox today. Your insight to the issues at hand has been eye opening to me as I'm searching for and developing new business strategies for our young label. We're building off the independent success of one of our artists and bringing others into our fold, while trying to be relevant and fresh in our approach to the the changing industry. I'm looking forward to more updates and news from your blog and plan to post news/updates here as we explore new ways of thinking.

Best,
James Rhodes

"But I get the feeling there’s a real danger of stumbling on these fairly haphazardly, picking up the ones that look like they might be useful, and then becoming completely overwhelmed because you’re having to use something you’ve committed to which doesn’t really fit.

You must have been listening in on the conversation after a recording session I worked at last night. almost verbatim, mof..

It seems the only solution to the everlasting question of "how does one make a living writing recording and performing original music" that surfaces in these conversations lately comes to 1) play live (but where? how? to whom?) 2) license your music to some whirl wide conglomerate (or as The Byrds put it in 1965 "Sell your soul to the company, Who are waiting there to sell plastic ware"). So..strategies, Andrew..what to do..

Looking forward to the guided consultation article(s).
