NMS Newshounds

Having had an encouraging response to my request for virtual interns, I’ve put my top applicants to the task of reinvigorating the Newswire.

Here are some things that struck me about the people who applied for the ‘position’ (not a job, as such, as I’m not offering anything by way of reward) of Virtual Intern:

1) They’re all male
2) They’re all over 25 (and some considerably over 35)
3) They live all over the place
4) They’re all smart and have far better things to do
5) They’re all flatteringly keen to help me out

I’ve set the VIs to work on collecting the most interesting and important bits of online news and commentary about the music industry and posting them to the Newswire page. If you haven’t checked out the Newswire before, this would be the time to start.

Best of all, the page generates an email that once a day will send you a collection of links to these articles and a short description of what the articles are about. Just put your email address into the appropriate place in the sidebar, and you’ll get them in your inbox each day. Just one email per day — no spam ever.

The Newswire is brought to you by the generous voluntary work of John, Tze-Ern, Gary, Laurence, Brendan, Andy, Matt and Ben. All hemispheres are represented, and hopefully this will give a much broader and complete view of music industry comment online.

It’s a greatly appreciated and valuable bit of archival and filing work via del.icio.us. Thanks so much, guys…

  1. Congrats on the interns!

Sounds like your advert/blog appeals to the X-generation. I read an interesting article about generations in this summer’s issue of HBR, and apparently this/my generation is more cynical/anti-corporate than any generation before, yet they/we are well-educated, which fits the:

  2. Just checked out the newswire and was pleasantly surprised to see useful articles there that what I had thought was my exhaustive collection of RSS feeds had not brought me.

However, I’m surprised to see that Andrew Dubber, owner of the largest RSS button on the internets, seems to be offering his newswire only as a daily email – did I get that right?

Turn it into its own RSS feed, separate from your main site feed, and I’m there

  3. Glad to hear the feedback, Mike. I was a bit worried that the Newswire might be overly exhaustive. A team of eight people contributing links makes the daily emails (which I prefer) seem quite daunting.

Newswire started life as an email list, and this was a way to automate that through del.icio.us RSS and Feedburner’s native email subscription service.

But the good news is that it’s already a separate feed, Mike. There’s a link to the delicious feed near the top of the Newswire page — though it is only a text link, and not quite as obvious as the main site button, which may only be the third biggest online.

    Here’s the direct link:

I subscribe to the Newswire through the RSS feed, and can attest that it works perfectly.

I’m glad to see you got your needed help, Andrew. I really wish I could’ve gotten in on it myself, but I just have way too many irons in the fire.
