I think I've read too many blogs and found myself with Gerd in the "futurist" camp. Worrying about monetizing copies is way old school now. I'm more interested in worrying about Merlin, cheap and frquent videography and T-shirts, merch etc.

I ended up following up a comment here and checking out Bruce from Songboost's blog. Reflected against my peer group he had a good point about the difference between 128 kbps and 320 kbps driving sales, but the moralising on music piracy was way out of touch. Gerd nailed it when he said something that criminalizes 90% of the audience is unworkable. No one in my peer group would consider paying for anything digitally - it's just too easy to steal - but will still happily pay nz$25 for two songs on vinyl.

I'm still not sure what to think about this. I know I personally would rather pay a buck for a high-quality file (that was also properly tagged) with no ads than to download a file with ads attached for free. That's just my personal reaction, though. I can't really comment on the market as a whole. I do like to see new ideas and experiments in the world of music distribution, though, and I wish them the best of luck.

Maybe Beth should read your "20 Things" e-book ;-) It took me WAY too long to find a link to music on the Blood Red Shoes site she linked too - not even an easily accessible MySpace link. Bad form!

Eventually rummaged around, found grand total of 2 working MP3s & one 30 sec clip...Oops.
